TRAFFIC
- Officers issued 16 traffic enforcement actions during the week.
PROPERTY CHECKS
- 106 business checks were made. 1 unsecured door was found.
- 1 extra patrol was requested by an out-of-town property owner this week.
INCIDENTS OF INTEREST
- Trespassing (Poteskeet Drive)
On August 26, 2024, officers were dispatched to the above listed address for an unknown male walking around what was supposed to be an unoccupied home. The suspect was seen on the homeowner’s surveillance camera system. The responding officers were unable to find anyone in the area. The home was checked thoroughly, and no signs of damage or entry were found.
- Inert Ordnance (South Baum Trail)
On August 26, 2024, officers were dispatched after the complainant found military ordnance on the beach. The ordnance was inspected by the Duck Fire Department who determined the ordnance was an inert practice round. The fire department took possession of the item per protocol.
- Animal Calls (Block of Duck Road)
On August 28 and August 31, 2024, officers responded to reports of sick racoons. The Dare County SPCA was contacted and they stated they were aware of the situation and that testing had ruled out rabies. Officers dispatched one of the racoons.
- Larceny (Schooner Ridge Drive)
On August 29, 2024, officers received a report of a stolen wedding ring. The victim reported leaving the ring in a drawer at the rental home. When the victim returned home from vacation, it was realized the ring was missing. Contact was made with the rental company and no property had been turned in. The report was made approximately a month after the vacation.
- Breaking/Entering/Larceny (East Charles Jenkins Lane)
On August 30, 2024, officers responded to a report of breaking and entering and larceny that was captured on a video surveillance camera. The suspect entered a ground floor bathroom and stole an item. The male was identified as 80-year-old Arthur Pelkey of Duck, North Carolina. He was arrested and charged with felony breaking and entering and felony larceny. Mr. Pelkey was held at the Dare County Detention Center in lieu of a $1,500 secured bond.
- Larceny (Duck Road)
On August 31, 2024, an officer working was alerted to a stolen license plate on a vehicle entering Town, by the Department’s automatic license plate reader system. The officer verified the license plate was stolen before stopping the vehicle. Upon investigation, the stolen license plate was seized, and the vehicle’s operator was cited for related violations.
- Domestic Dispute (Duck Road)
On September 1, 2024, officers responded to a report of a verbal dispute in the parking lot at this address. Upon arrival, officers found a couple that had been involved in an argument. Officers verified that neither party was assaulted before allowing the parties to leave the area.

- East Charles Jenkins Road / Duck Road
On August 28, 2024, officers were notified of a crash between a vehicle and a deer. A crash report was filed.
