The Town of Duck is nearing completion of the first phase of pedestrian improvements along the east side of Duck Road (N.C. Highway 12). VHB Engineering conducted a final walk-through of the project on May 24th and documented that Barnhill Contracting has successfully completed its portion of the project.
Over the past week, American Road Markings completed installation of the crosswalk markings and bike lane markings in the northbound shoulder of Duck Road. Crosswalk lighting was installed at the new crosswalk between the Town Park and PNC Bank.
There are several final pieces to come together before the project is fully completed. Coinjock Farms is awaiting delivery of nearly 1,300 Little Bluestem plants, scheduled to be available in the first week of June, to complete the landscaping project. Millstone Marine will be constructing a new pedestrian ramp to line up with the new crosswalk markings and median between the post office and Sunset Grille. Solar lighting fixtures have been ordered for installation at the ends of the gateway median by Four Seasons.
The Town of Duck is also working closely with VHB Engineering to resolve two issues that have arisen in recent weeks. First, the small areas of river rock located north and south of the asphalt at each street and driveway intersection have had rocks tracked out when vehicles run over them. VHB is trying several test solutions to resolve this issue. Secondly, a recent heavy rainstorm washed out mulch from many of the roadside landscape beds. It is VHB’s opinion that the mulch will not wash out so easily once the plantings are in place (see above). In addition, a mulch bonding material will be sprayed to minimize erosion of the mulch in the future.
