Pedestrian Plan Update- February 16, 2018

Construction on Phase I of the Town of Duck Comprehensive Pedestrian Plan along the east side of Duck Road (N.C. Highway 12) in Duck Village saw substantial progress during the past week.  Barnhill Contracting completed most of the detailed, fine grading for the project.  This portion of the project includes removal of existing asphalt outside of the four-foot (4’) wide bike lane, digging an infiltration trench for the landscaping, adding a stone base, filling the trench will a soil mix for future planting, and grading the adjoining five-foot (5’) section for the sidewalk.  A paved portion of driveways at Scarborough Faire, Twiddy Realty, Cotton Gin, Loblolly Pines, Roadside Bar & Grill, Kellogg Hardware, PNC Bank, and the residence by Duck Deli were removed as part of this process to regrade the driveways consistent with the designed grade of the sidewalk.  Thanks to careful coordination, access has not been blocked to any businesses during this process.  Barnhill also completed its construction on a block retaining wall located by the Scarborough Faire/Scarborough Lane properties.  The contractors are still working with utility companies on moving utility lines during the grading process.

During the week of February 19th, Barnhill Contracting will be placing the stone base, then forming and pouring concrete for the new driveway entrances and stretches of the sidewalks.  In addition, the forecasted fair weather on Tuesday and Wednesday may allow Barnhill Contracting to pave an eight-foot (8’) wide asphalt shared use path the southernmost portion of the project between the crosswalk at Aqua Restaurant & Spa and existing Duck Trail in front of Four Seasons to the south.

While heavy construction equipment is being operated along the side of the road, there may be a traffic lane shift to the middle lane.  Please be alert and drive slowly and safely as you pass through the construction area.
