The first phase of pedestrian improvements along the east side of Duck Road (N.C. Highway 12) in Duck Village is close to completion. Over the past week, Barnhill Contracting completed much of the final grading in preparation for landscaping around the sidewalk. They also completed construction of the two landscaped medians in the center lane of Duck Road: the northern gateway median at the crosswalk by Sunset Grille and southern gateway median south of Aqua by the Four Seasons neighborhood. These medians are intended to be attractive traffic-calming improvements that let drivers know they are arriving in Duck Village and need to slow down and drive attentively.
On Thursday, VHB Engineering, Barnhill Construction, and the Town of Duck conducted a walk-through of the project to review the construction and develop a punch-list of items to be completed before Barnhill Contracting closes out the project. Barnhill plans to complete the majority of these items in the early part of next week (week of April 30th). Most of the plants have arrived and Coinjock Farms Landscaping will begin installing the landscaping between the sidewalk and bike lane toward the latter portion of the week. Next Friday, Liquid Lawns plans to spray hydroseed to stabilize the graded areas alongside the new sidewalks. The project is on schedule to be completed by its target date of May 15, 2018.
Although the sidewalk itself is complete, please be aware that the project area is still an active construction site, particularly as the final touches are completed next week. Whether walking, biking, or driving, please be alert for hazards and travel safely as you pass through the construction area.
