Pedestrian Plan Phase II Update- June 7, 2019

Over the past week, RPC Contracting has made substantial progress toward the completion of the sidewalk along the west side of Duck Village.  RPC poured driveways and sidewalks from Super Wings past the Town Green to the entrance drive at Duck Town Hall.  The Town also contracted for a water meter to be relocated in front of the Osprey Landing Shopping Center.

RPC has formed all of the remaining sidewalk sections and, weather permitting, plans on pouring the final sections of sidewalks and driveways on Monday, June 10th.  These areas include the remaining half of the driveway at the Soundside Shoppes, small section by Osprey Landing, stretch in front of Town Hall, and replacement section in front of Kellogg’s.  RPC will continue working on the remaining aspects of the project including fine grading along the sides of the sidewalk, filling the landscaped areas with soil, stabilizing slopes with grass seed, installing truncated domes (those Lego-looking panels) at remaining crosswalks, reinstalling signs and lighting fixtures, and paving/patching asphalt.

Town officials will be meeting with RPC Construction and VHB Engineering next week to conduct a final walk through and prepare a punch-list for completion of the project.

Due to the use of heavy equipment, the southbound travel lane may be closed at times with traffic directed into the middle lane during the closures. Please be alert for construction activity and drive slowly and safely as you travel through this area of town.

The second phase of the sidewalk project will be constructed along the west side of Duck Road from the crosswalk at Aqua Restaurant & Spa to Resort Realty at the northern end of Duck Village. Planned improvements include a dedicated bike lane, landscaped strip, and sidewalk. The project will also involve utility relocation and the installation of new lighted crosswalks at the Waterfront Shops and Dune Road. Phase II sidewalk construction has an expected completion date during the second week in June.

RPC Contracting is also removing asphalt in preparation for replacing two sections of the Duck Trail adjoining the Sanderling neighborhood in the northern part of Town. These areas had bumps and broken asphalt due to root intrusion. The replacement sections will be in concrete for better stability and wear over time.
