Pedestrian Plan Phase II Update- February 22, 2019

Over the past week, we’ve continued seeing of the progression of the new sidewalk through Duck Village. RPC Contracting was able to complete sidewalk formwork in several areas. However; due to the large amount of rain, they were unable to pour new sections of sidewalk.  The project continues to proceed in a southerly direction.

With good weather anticipated on Monday February 25th, RPC plans on pouring sidewalks in the area from Nags Head Hammocks to the northern entrance of the Town Park by the playground.  This stretch features a bend in the sidewalk to bypass the gravestones and landscaping at the front of the property then tie into an existing crosswalk. RPC also plans to form and pour sidewalks along the front of the Wee Winks Square shopping center and a final piece by the Waterfront Shops’ sign.

During the upcoming week, RPC also plans on pouring half of the driveway into Duck Town Hall.  At Town Hall, half of the driveway will remain open while the concrete cures on the other half.  Please be alert and careful as you enter and exit the property over the next couple of weeks with only a single travel lane available.  The northern parking lot by the playground will remain fully open for parking and access to the boardwalk.

Due to the use of heavy equipment, the southbound travel lane may be closed at times with traffic being directed into the middle lane during the closures. Please be alert for construction activity and drive slowly and safely through this area as you travel through town.

The second phase of the sidewalk project will be constructed along the west side of Duck Road from the crosswalk at Aqua Restaurant & Spa to Resort Realty at the northern end of Duck Village. Planned improvements include a dedicated bike lane, landscaped strip, and sidewalk. The project will also involve utility relocation and the installation of new lighted crosswalks at the Waterfront Shops and Dune Road.  Phase 2 construction has an expected completion date sometime in May.
