Pedestrian Plan Phase II Update- February 15, 2019

Over the past week, we’ve continued seeing the progression of the new sidewalk through Duck Village. RPC Contracting poured a lengthy stretch of sidewalk from the Waterfront Shops southward past the water tower to Kitty Hawk Kites. Additional sidewalk formwork has been installed as the project continues in a southerly direction.

Duck Town Hall will be closed on Monday, February 18th in observance of Presidents Day. RPC plans to temporarily close access to the Town Hall parking lot on this day to begin reconstruction of the driveway entrance. Once formed, half of the driveway will remain open while the concrete cures on the other half. Please be alert and careful as you enter and exit the property with only a single lane available for entrance and exit. The northern parking lot by the playground will remain open during this time for parking and access to the boardwalk.

While rain is expected during the week of February 18th, RPC will continue pouring driveways and sidewalks along the front of the Wee Winks Square shopping center as weather permits. They also plan on pouring the new concrete stairway at the Soundfeet Shoes/Ocean Atlantic Rentals property.

Due to the use of heavy equipment, the southbound travel lane may be closed at times with traffic being directed into the middle lane during the closures. Please be alert for construction activity and drive slowly and safely through this area as you travel through town.

The second phase of the sidewalk project will be constructed along the west side of Duck Road from the crosswalk at Aqua Restaurant & Spa to Resort Realty at the northern end of Duck Village. Planned improvements include a dedicated bike lane, landscaped strip, and sidewalk. The project will also involve utility relocation and the installation of new lighted crosswalks at the Waterfront Shops and Dune Road. A majority of the Phase 2 construction will take place over the Winter/early-Spring months, with an expected completion date sometime in May 2019.
