Duck Town Council Adopts New Flood Insurance Rate Maps

The Duck Town Council adopted the revised Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) on May 20, 2020. The effective date of the new maps is June 19, 2020. The maps can be used for flood insurance rating purposes on or after the June 19, 2020 effective date. Although the FIRMs have been finalized by the federal government, municipalities are required to adopt the maps.

The revised FIRMs may be viewed at the NC Flood Risk Mapping System webpage at https://fris.nc.gov/fris/ and will be made available the Town website by the end of the week.  If you need assistance viewing the maps or locating your property contact Sandy Cross, the Town Floodplain Manager at 252-255-1234.

In conjunction with the adoption of the new maps, the Flood Damage Prevention Ordinance was updated with an effective date of June 19, 2020. Please find Ordinance 20-01 here. The new standards are designed to improve the Town’s resiliency to coastal flooding and minimize property damage due to flooding.  Many of the adopted standards will have the additional benefit of improving the Town’s CRS rating and potentially reducing insurance rates.
