The Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble is one of the groups sponsored by the non-profit, Philharmonic Association, Inc. The mission of the Philharmonic Association is to provide an opportunity for young musicians to learn, understand, and perform all genres of great classical and jazz music, to provide professional training to promote the students’ participation in and lifelong understanding and love of great classical and jazz music, and to increase family awareness and community interest to ensure continuing appreciation of, participation in, and financial support of these musical activities.
The Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble (TYJE) was established in 2005 under the auspices of the non-profit Philharmonic Association. Awarded the Raleigh Medal of Arts in 2012 for extraordinary contribution to the arts, the Philharmonic Association sponsors nine groups including five youth orchestras and four jazz ensembles. TYJE is based in Raleigh and is open to advanced middle and high school musicians, selected by annual audition in August. Under the direction of Dr. Gregg Gelb since 2010, TYJE members develop the skills to perform a wide range of jazz compositions in a professional setting and are given a variety of performance opportunities. The current students come from t different schools and many have no other opportunity to play in a jazz big band. They rehearse once a week for an hour and a half.
