The Town of Duck’s 2010 Summer Events series is back with even more fun for the whole family! This year’s schedule offers evening concerts; exercise classes on the Town Green; morning musical theater; children’s story time; an author discussion series; a newly-added magic show; and of course, the Town’s annual Fourth of July Parade! All of the events, except for the parade, will take place at the Duck Town Park, 1200 Duck Road.
The events are free. Please remember to bring a blanket or lawn chair for events being held on the Town Green. Beach umbrellas or tents are NOT permitted within the Town Park. All events will be held outside. In the case of inclement weather or site unavailability, an activity may be cancelled or rescheduled. Any changes will be posted at the Town Park or on our Web site and/or on the Town’s events hotline. Additional events may also be added.

Duck’s Annual 4th of July Parade — Monday, July 5 at 9:00 a.m.
Duck’s Fourth of July Parade will be held on Monday, July 5, 2010 at 9:00 a.m., with an after-event following at the Duck Town Park featuring music by Ruth Wyand & Friends. PLEASE NOTE that the parade is being held on Monday, July 5, 2010 so as not to conflict with weekend summer traffic. The one-mile parade route is the same annually and begins at Scarborough Lane and continues down Ocean Way and then Christopher Drive. Summer Music Series
This popular evening concert series returns for its fourth season. For six weeks, local musical groups will take the stage at the Duck Town Park Gazebo. The concerts are from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. and are on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from June 29 through August 5. The current schedule of performances is:

Morning Exercise Classes
For 2010, three morning exercise classes are being offered. These classes will run from May to September. All Classes will be led by an instructor from Outer Banks Yoga and Pilates.
Mondays – Basic Yoga/Deep Stretch will be held from May 3 through September 27.
Tuesdays – Tai Chi will be held from May 4 through September 28.
Thursdays – “Fit and Flexible,” a beginning Pilates class, will be held from May 6 through September 30.
All classes begin at 7:30 a.m. and will be held on the Town Green. Please bring a yoga/Pilates mat or a towel and water if you plan to participate in the Basic Yoga or Pilates class.
Family Magic Show
Witness incredible illusions, mind-bending magic, comedy, and audience participation the entire family will love — live on stage! OBXtreme Magic features some of the most incredible magic and illusions performed by world-renowned illusionists Clive Allen & Tracy. This four week long series of shows will be held at 10:00 a.m. at the Town Amphitheater every Tuesday in July: July 6, 13, 20, and 27, and is underwritten by Kellogg Supply and The Cottage Shop. Although this event is free, tickets will be required for entry as seating in the amphitheater is limited. Tickets will be available at Kellogg Supply, 1201 Duck Road, the week before the show.
Morning Theater and Music Series
The cast from The Lost Colony Musical Theater will be in Duck on Wednesdays from July 7 through August 11 presenting music and shows from its repertoire. All shows are at 10:00 a.m. and will be held in the Duck Amphitheater.

Children’s Story Time
Bring the children for story time sponsored by Duck’s two book stores: Duck’s Cottage and Island Book Store. Story time will be held in the Duck Amphitheater at 10:00 a.m. on Thursdays beginning July 1 and continuing through Thursday, August 5. Story time is geared to children between the ages of 3 and 7.
Author Discussion Series
Our author discussion series is coordinated by the Town in conjunction with Duck’s Cottage Book Store. This six-week series will be held on Fridays from July 9 through August 13 at 10:00 a.m. in the Duck Amphitheater and will feature regional and local authors who focus on Outer Banks topics including history, food, and culture. Following the discussion, attendees are invited back to Duck’s Cottage for author signings. The schedule of authors is:
•Friday, July 9: Beachcomber’s Odyssey, Vol. 1; Treasures from a Collected Past by S. Deacon Ritterbush
The archaeology of beachcombing offers ‘combers a new way to wander, not just as a collector pocketing treasure but also as a historian, biologist and anthropologist. This lecture will help you develop the skills and knowledge needed to become a scientist at the shore. Understanding the context of a stretch of beach – its history, culture and geology – enriches and adds exciting new dimensions to your beachcombing experience. During this talk, Dr. Ritterbush (aka “Dr. Beachcomb”) will offer up fascinating science facts, pragmatic beachcombing tips and various techniques that prove useful in treasure hunting at the shore. You will learn how to target fruitful search sites, identify artifacts and expand your collecting to include not only sea glass, fossils and shells but also ceramic shards, driftwood, man-made artifacts and more.

Local author Travis Morris will be discussing his multiple books: Currituck: Ducks, Politicians, and Outlaw Gunners; Duck Hunting on Currituck Sound: Tales from a Native Gunner; Currituck Memories and Adventures: More Tales from a Native Gunner.

Animal lovers and art aficionados alike will enjoy this hardcover book filled to the brim with spectacular photography by the renowned Brooke Mayo of Brooke Mayo Photography.
•Friday, July 30: The Outer Banks Cookbook by Elizabeth Wiegand
Author Elizabeth Wiegand will be preparing a couple of savory recipes The Outer Banks Cookbook, which consists of more than 150 recipes that celebrate the many flavors of North Carolina’s coastal communities, including both traditional dishes and specialties from the many restaurants dotting the Outer Banks.

Outer Banks natives Gail Midgett and Bea Basnight will be cooking up some delicious recipes straight from their series of Taste of the Outer Banks cookbooks.
Duck’s Fourth Annual Jazz Festival
Duck’s Fourth Annual Jazz Festival will be held on Sunday, October 10, 2010 from 11 a.m. to dusk on the Town Green. Headlining the Festival will be Joyce Cooling, a San Francisco-based Jazz guitarist and vocalist. Acts also performing in the Festival are: Adrian Crutchfield from Charlotte, NC; Big Rick and the Bombers from Wake Forest, NC; and The Ruth Muth Big Band from Norfolk, VA, featuring Jazz singer and Outer Banks local Laura Martier.
