Rotating Art Show: Linus Quilt Exhibit
May 3, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Project Linus was founded by Karen Louke after reading an article in Parade Magazine about a 3-year-old going through treatment for Leukemia. The article described a special “blanky” that helped the young child through hospital visits and treatments. Soon after reading the article, Karen made the decision to start bringing homemade blankets to Denver’s Rocky Mountain Children’s Cancer Center.
Outer Banks resident and Knitting Addiction owner, Jeanne Shrader, serves as coordinator for the Outer Banks groups. As coordinator, Jeanne is tasked with the distribution of the quilts. Sally Meagher leads a group of 60 women that meets on Fridays at Duck United Methodist Church in January and February. She is responsible for distributing new patterns each week. Most of the fabric is donated and collected all year. This year, they have made over 500 quilts for distribution to children that are ill or have suffered trauma. A large majority of those will be handed out on the Outer Banks.
After this year, the group will end their affiliation with Project Linus and go on their own as the OBX Blanketeers. One reason for the split from Project Linus is to have the allowance of distributing to a wider range of people in need, including nursing homes, chemo patients, veterans, etc. This group not only quilts, but knits, crochets, and makes fleece blankets. Since beginning in 2000, over 5,000 quilts have been made and distributed.
In addition to the display at the Duck Town Hall, the quilts are also hung at the Duck United Methodist Church on the second Saturday in March. For more information or to be part of next year’s group, contact Sally Meagher, 252-261-0276.
An opening Reception for this exhibit will be held in the First Floor Conference Room of the Duck Town Hall on Saturday, May 4, 2019, from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.
The Linus Quilt Exhibit will be on display Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. May 3 – July 24, 2019, in the first floor Conference Room at Duck Town Hall, 1200 Duck Road. The show will be closed on weekends and holidays. Rotating Art Shows change quarterly, feature local artists, and are coordinated by volunteers for the Town of Duck.
