Gwen Taylor Mixed Media Opening Reception
May 7, 2016 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
FreeThe Gwen Taylor Mixed Media show will be on display Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. through July 27th in the first floor Conference Room at Duck Town Hall, 1200 Duck Road.
Prior to becoming an artist, Gwen Taylor began her career as a clinical social worker and later as an attorney. Her interest in art began with History of Art classes in college, visits to museums and work and volunteer experiences in galleries and with fine arts and crafts shows. This interest grew as she took classes in the arts and upon relocating to the Outer Banks, she joined the Dare County Arts Council and she now displays her work in the Arts Council Gallery in Manteo, and in other galleries on the Outer Banks, and in Norfolk and Cape Charles.
When asked about her art and inspiration, Taylor shared the following. “As a mixed media artist, I enjoy working with many different kinds of paper, and making or embellishing papers. A mental image or one I have seen elsewhere will suggest a theme as will a phrase or a color or a place I have visited. Color and texture are most important in my work. I like to embellish a creation sometimes with found objects, fabrics, strings, old things, stamps, stencils, sand, shells, feathers, coins. I use a variety of artists’ mediums to adhere the pieces to each other and to the base of a piece, and I sometimes use paint or pastels over or under or as an integral part of my pieces. A variety of other artists have inspired me: Outsiders, Matisse, and Jacob Lawrence to name a few. Since moving to the Outer Banks permanently in 2011, I am more inspired by nature —the beach, the woods, and the animals—than ever before.
The Town of Duck Wall Décor Committee established a series of Rotating Art Shows to display the works of local artists and organizations. The artwork is on display at Duck Town Hall in the First Floor Conference Room. Each show is scheduled to run for three months at a time and is free and open to the public Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The public is invited to an opening reception for each show.
