Bias Speaker Series

We have a special addition to the Bias Speaker Series for Jazz Week here in Duck. Douglas A. Jackson, Professor of Music at Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City, NC will be here to tell us about the life and music of the legendary Pioneer of Bebop Jazz, Max Roach.

In 2012 Douglas founded the annual Elizabeth City State University Jazz Festival where the list of guest artists includes: Jae Sinnett, Lesa Terry, Sean Jones, Michael Dease, Marcus Anderson, The Rhythm Project, Ron Carter and Shana Tucker and Charlton Singleton. From 2012 to 2020, Douglas participated in the North Carolina Humanities Council Road Scholars Speakers Program and now serves on the North Carolina Humanities Board of Trustees.  In May 2023 Douglas received a scholarship from Jazz at Lincoln Center to attend their annual Band Directors Summer Academy.     

Douglas entered teaching after two decades of progressive responsibilities in Music and Film accounting, including 11 years with MGM Studios, Inc.  Douglas is a native of Los Angeles, CA where he received music degrees from California State University, Los Angeles. 

The Bias Speaker Series is supported by the John H. & Frances Lane Bias Foundation, Inc. (The Bias Foundations), in collaboration with the Town of Duck. All events are fee adn open to the public
