Bias Speaker Series: Into the Burning Sea
April 6, 2019 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm
Join us Saturday, April 6 for “Into the Burning Sea,” a presentation by filmmaker, historian, and author Kevin Duffus.
Presented in conjunction with Duck’s Cottage.
“This story is about a day in August 1918 when the ocean off Rodanthe, North Carolina, was ablaze: the day when 51 British merchant sailors desperately struggled to escape their tanker loaded with gasoline after it was torpedoed by a German U-Boat; the day when six courageous Coast Guardsmen, tossed by the waves of fire in a small boat, entered the hellish and deadly inferno of explosions and toxic fumes and navigated a maze of black smoke, imperiling their lives to rescue strangers in distress. It was the day when life-saving history was made.”
A light reception will be served from 6:00 – 6:30 p.m. Sponsored by the Bias Speaker Series.
The Bias Speaker Series is supported by the John H. & Frances Lane Bias Foundation, Inc. (The Bias Foundation), in collaboration with the Town of Duck. The series will offer presentations throughout the year by educators, scientists, and community leaders on a variety of topics. All events are free and open to the public.
