Pedestrian Plan Update – January 11, 2019

Construction work is proceeding rapidly on the bicycle/pedestrian improvements along the west side of Duck Road through Duck Village.  During the past week, Millstone Marine completed construction of a lengthy retaining wall in front of the Town Park property and began construction of another retaining wall in front of Ocean Atlantic Rentals/Soundfeet Shoes.  Generally moving from north to south along the project corridor, RPC Contracting has completed significant grading work south to the Osprey Landing shopping center (Duck Donuts).  Dominion Energy, Charter Communications, and CenturyLink are involved with moving utilities out of the path of the future sidewalk.

The week beginning on January 14th will see a substantial amount of construction activity.  RPC Contracting will continue grading activities in preparation for construction along the southern portion of the project area.  There will be significant construction activity by the Osprey Landing shopping center as CenturyLink coordinates with RPC on moving a large utility junction box from the path of the sidewalk.  RPC will also prepare for reconstruction of many concrete driveway entrances along the northern half of the project.  RPC will continue to work southward as it removes asphalt edges in areas designated for future landscaping.  Millstone Marine plans to complete the retaining wall in front of Ocean Atlantic Rentals/Soundfeet Shoes and may begin construction of the final wall at Aqua Restaurant & Spa at the southern end of the project.  Millstone may also pull up and replace the existing post-and-rope barrier in front of the Soundside Shoppes (Bob’s Bait & Tackle).  Due to the use of heavy equipment, the southbound travel lane may be closed at times with traffic being directed into the middle lane during the closures. Please be alert for construction activity and drive slowly and safely through this area as you travel through town.

The second phase of the sidewalk project will be constructed along the west side of Duck Road from the crosswalk at Aqua Restaurant & Spa to Resort Realty at the northern end of Duck Village. Planned improvements include a dedicated bike lane, landscaped strip, and sidewalk. The project will also involve utility relocation and the installation of new lighted crosswalks at the Waterfront Shops and Dune Road.  A majority of the Phase 2 construction will take place over the Winter/early-Spring months, with an expected completion date sometime in May 2019.
