Pedestrian Plan Update- February 23, 2018

Construction on Phase I of the Town of Duck Comprehensive Pedestrian Plan along the east side of Duck Road (N.C. Highway 12) in Duck Village hit several milestones during the past week.  The warmer weather on Tuesday and Wednesday allowed Barnhill Contracting to pave the eight-foot (8’) wide asphalt shared use path the southernmost portion of the project between the crosswalk at Aqua Restaurant & Spa and existing Duck Trail in front of Four Seasons to the south.  They also completed the removal of existing asphalt outside of the four-foot (4’) wide bike lane, digging/filling a trench for landscaping, and grading the adjoining five-foot (5’) section for the sidewalk.  Progress was made on laying and compacting the stone base for the sidewalks.  The first sections of sidewalk were poured in the area of the Cotton Gin and Loblolly Pines shopping center.  Thanks to careful coordination, access has not been blocked to any businesses during this process.

During the week of February 26th, Barnhill Contracting will continue to place the stone base, then form and pour concrete for the new driveway entrances and stretches of the sidewalks.  They will also be pouring many of the new concrete driveway aprons as they proceed through those areas.  It’s exciting to see the final form of the project take shape as the sidewalks are installed.

While heavy construction equipment is being operated along the side of the road, there may be a traffic lane shift to the middle lane.  Please continue to stay alert and drive slowly and safely as you pass through the construction area.
