Construction work is well underway on the bicycle/pedestrian improvements along the west side of Duck Road through Duck Village. During the past week, Millstone Marine completed reconstruction of an older retaining wall by the Nags Head Hammocks/Duck United Methodist Church properties and preparations for the long retaining wall in front of the Town Park property. RPC Contracting began significant grading along the Town Park property. Three additional trees will be removed from this area on Saturday, January 4th to accommodate the relocation of underground power lines. RPC also began the installation of new driveways for Resort Realty at the northernmost end of the project area. Charter Communications and CenturyLink are involved with moving several utility pedestals out of the path of the future sidewalk.
The week beginning January 7th will see a substantial amount of construction activity. RPC Contracting plans on installing a number of additional concrete driveways on the northern end of the project including entrances into Tommy’s Market, The Blue Point, Waterfront Shops, and Stan White Realty. With the exception of Tommy’s Market (which is closed for business during this timeframe), access will be available to all these businesses during construction of the driveways. Millstone Marine will install a lengthy retaining wall in front of the Town Park property and may begin construction of another wall in front of Ocean Atlantic Rentals/Soundfeet Shoes. Due to the use of heavy equipment, the southbound travel lane may be closed at times with traffic being directed into the middle lane during the closures. Please be alert for construction activity and drive slowly and safely through this area as you travel through town.
The second phase of the sidewalk project will be constructed along the west side of Duck Road from the crosswalk at Aqua Restaurant & Spa to Resort Realty at the northern end of Duck Village. Planned improvements include a dedicated bike lane, landscaped strip, and sidewalk. The project will also involve utility relocation and the installation of new lighted crosswalks at the Waterfront Shops and Dune Road. A majority of the Phase 2 construction will take place over the Winter/early-Spring months, with an expected completion date sometime in May 2019.
