Thanks to clear weather over the past week, very impressive progress on the new sidewalk was made. RPC was able to pour sidewalks in the stretch in front of Nags Head Hammocks, Duck United Methodist Church, and Wee Winks Square. The sidewalk is now complete from the northern end of the project at Resort Realty to the northern entrance into the Town Park by the playground. The second half of the driveway into Duck Town Hall has also been poured and will be open for traffic next week. Until then, please be alert and careful as you enter and exit the property with only a single travel lane available. The northern parking lot by the Town’s playground will remain fully open for parking and access to the boardwalk.
The project will proceed to the south during the upcoming week of March 11th. RPC plans to grade and pour the section of sidewalk adjoining the new retaining wall in front of the Town Green. They will also pour the new dumpster pad and enclosure at the Osprey Landing shopping center. RPC will be conducting additional work on the southern portion of the project, with the exact locations to be determined after a meeting with Dominion Power on Tuesday, March 12.
Due to the use of heavy equipment, the southbound travel lane may be closed at times with traffic being directed into the middle lane during the closures. Please be alert for construction activity and drive slowly and safely as you travel through this area of town.
The second phase of the sidewalk project will be constructed along the west side of Duck Road from the crosswalk at Aqua Restaurant & Spa to Resort Realty at the northern end of Duck Village. Planned improvements include a dedicated bike lane, landscaped strip, and sidewalk. The project will also involve utility relocation and the installation of new lighted crosswalks at the Waterfront Shops and Dune Road. Phase 2 construction has an expected completion date sometime in May.
