UPDATE: The victim has been identified as George Henry Provost, age 61. Duck Police are continuing with their investigation and no additional information is available at this time.
Duck, NC — At approximately 7:29 a.m. on February 26, 2015, Town of Duck Police were dispatched to investigate an assault in progress at 1214 Duck Road, Duck, North Carolina. Arriving officers located an adult male inside the property suffering from an apparent stab wound. At 7:36 a.m. Duck Police requested medical support. Dare County Emergency Medical Service transported the victim to The Outer Banks Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:40 a.m. The victim was a 61 year old male whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
While the investigation by Duck Police is ongoing, initial statements indicate the victim was in a verbal argument with the suspect. The argument escalated and by witness reports the suspect obtained a kitchen knife and a physical altercation took place. The suspect, William Everett Long, age 53, was taken into custody without incident on scene. After initial questioning, Long was transported to the Dare County Detention Center. Long has been charged with first degree murder and is being held without bond.
The subjects were staying at Duck United Methodist Church as part of the OBX Room in the Inn program (OBXRITI). OBXRITI is a non-profit, church-based program helping the homeless in Dare County. Shelter is offered on a rotational basis at churches throughout Dare County during colder months. No other guests or volunteers with the program were injured as a result of the dispute.
