WATER WATCH

WATER -- something we should not take for granted. Residents and visitors to Duck are asked to do their part in water conservation by following these helpful tips. Using less water will benefit you in at least two ways: it will reduce your quarterly water bill, and it will help ensure our future water supply.

In the Kitchen & Laundry
Use the dishwasher only for full loads.
When washing dishes by hand, fill one sink for rinsing.
Store drinking water in the refrigerator instead of running tap water until cool.
Refrigerate soft drinks to reduce the amount of ice is needed.
Defrost food overnight in the refrigerator or use the defrost setting on your microwave.
Wash only full loads of laundry...or change the water setting for smaller loads.

In the Bathroom
   Reduce showering time.
Fill the bathtub no more than 1/3rd full.
Toilets aren't wastebaskets ... avoid flushing it unnecessarily!
Turn off the tap while brushing teeth or shaving.
Reduce the use of the Jacuzzi...and cover it up when not in use.
Use an outside footwash to reduce the amount of sand tracked into the house.

Around the House
Stop leaks and drips immediately -- visitors should contact their rental agency.
Turn off the water completely when you leave the house.
Insulate pipes to avoid a burst in the winter.

Outdoors & Beyond
Use a broom (instead of a garden hose) to clean walks, drives, and porches.
Discourage children (and adults!) from playing with the water hose.
Make use of a commercial carwash that treats and recycles their water.
Report all significant water losses (broken pipes, open hydrants, errant sprinklers) to property owners, local authorities, or Dare County Water Department (252-441-7788).

Conserve water because it's the right thing to do. Trying to do something each day will result in saving water. Even if the results seem minimal, every drop counts and YOU CAN make a difference.
