TOWN HISTORY

The Town of Duck is Dare County's northernmost community, and one of the most popular resort destinations on the Outer Banks.   Incorporated on May 1, 2002, Duck is also the Outer Banks' newest town.

It was formed by an act of the North Carolina legislature. To view the House Bill's history, click here and for the bill itself, House Bill 882, click here.

Duck offers visitors numerous outdoor recreational activities, concerts, watersports, fine dining, eclectic shopping, and art galleries.  Of course, our beaches are fantastic and the sunsets are not to be missed!

With the recent opening of Duck’s new Town Park and soundside boardwalk, Duck is rapidly becoming the Outer Banks' most vibrant recreational, cultural, and entertainment center. The Duck Town Park is designed to be a premier community recreational facility enabling visitors to partake in the natural beauty of this 11-acre soundside maritime forest and willow swamp.

Park amenities include a gazebo, boardwalk, public kayak/canoe launch, picnic shelter, playground, and various walking trails throughout the park’s natural habitat.  Park visitors can listen to an evening summer concert; participate in an exercise class; have a picnic lunch; or just kick back, relax, and enjoy the park’s natural beauty.

OUR TOWN SEAL

Duck Town Seal

Encircled by rope and fishing floats, the colors of the Duck seal are as bright and vibrant as the people of our community. The tranquil backdrop of a sunset over the waters of the sound reflect the exquisite elements of our area, nature’s constant reminders of Duck’s celebrated surroundings.

The composition’s main character, a canvasback decoy, was selected to portray the history for which Duck is known. It was created by Alvirah (pronounced "Alvay") Wright, who is known to be one of North Carolina’s most famous decoy makers. Wright crafted this decoy while living in Duck in the early 1900's. In addition to his carvings, he also built boats as a trade, and logged in the area. All of his decoys have high, graceful heads, wide sterns, and delicately carved bills. The Wright decoys are known to reflect the ultimate in style, grace, and workmanship, as much as the new Town of Duck intends to carry those qualities into our promising future.

The self-taught artist who created the seal, Denise Deacon, was born in Pittsburgh, PA, and visited the Outer Banks every summer as a child during the 1960s. She realized her dream of living on the Outer Banks when she moved here in 1988.
