The Town of Southern Shores has recently received several reports of wild animal attacks and a confirmed case of a rabid fox. Rabies can become epidemic in the wild, however there are things that you can do to help protect your pets and your loved ones.
-
Make sure your pets have up-to-date rabies vaccinations. Take the time TODAY to check their rabies tags. If it has expired or you cannot find their tag or rabies vaccination or certificate, please call your vet and set up a rabies vaccination (or ask your vet to check their records).
-
Don't feed wild animals! If you are feeding wild animals, please stop feeding them. This only encourages wild animals, which may have rabies (but likely don't), to stay near your house. Plus, feeding wild animals harms their long-term ability to fend for themselves.
-
Keep you pets under your control at all times. Dogs should always be on a leash when off your property and should be under your direct control when on your property.
-
Make a report to the Police when a wild animal approaches your pet. This is NOT normal behavior for a wild animal. The Town of Duck Police Department can be reached at 261-1112 or you can contact Dare Central Communications at 473-3444 at any time day or night.
-
Lastly, discharge of a gun or trapping animals inside Town limits is not legal. Animals suspected of rabies or otherwise being sick, injured, or dead should be immediately reported to the Town of Duck Police Department (261-1112), SPCA/Dare County Animal Control (475-5620) or Dare Central Communications (473-3444).
