Town of Duck Summer Events Schedule for the week of July 5, 2010

The Town of Duck’s 2010 Summer Events series is in full swing! This year’s schedule offers evening concerts; exercise classes on the Town Green; morning musical theater; children’s story time; author discussion series; and a newly-added family magic show. All of the events are free and will take place at the Duck Town Park located at 1200 Duck Road unless otherwise noted.

The schedule of events for the week of July 5 is (subject to change):

Monday, July 5, 2010
Basic Yoga/Deep Stretch 7:30 a.m. – Yoga is cancelled due to the Sixth Annual Independence Day Parade.

Independence Day Parade 9:00 a.m.- The one-mile parade route is the same annually. It begins at the crest of the hill past the back parking lot on Scarborough Lane. The route will turn left onto Ocean Way and then turn left again onto Christopher Drive. The parade will end on the corner of Christopher Drive and Duck Road (NC12). Remember, NO PART OF THE PARADE IS ON DUCK ROAD (NC 12). And parking in Town is at a premium, so please plan to walk or ride your bicycle, and get here early!

The sixth annual parade will have an after-event following at the Town Park featuring music by Ruth Wyand & Friends. If you are attending the parade, please arrive early so you can get a good spot on the parade route.

Tuesday, July 6, 2010
Tai Chi 7:30 a.m. – Tai Chi is appropriate for people of all ages. Julia Daniel from Outer Banks Yoga and Pilates in Kitty Hawk is the instructor. Participants should bring a towel and water. In the case of inclement weather, this class will be held at the picnic shelter.
Family Magic Show 10:00 a.m. – Witness incredible illusions, mind-bending magic, comedy, and audience participation the entire family will love – live on stage by OBXtreme Magic. Although this event is free, tickets will be required for entry as seating in the amphitheater is limited. Visit Kellogg’s and The Cottage Shop, 1201 Duck Road, for tickets starting the Saturday before the show.

Summer Music Series 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. – Watson & Calhoun – Watson and Calhoun are an eclectic folk-alternative musical duet featuring vocals, guitar, and hand percussion. The pair will perform original compositions, as well as cover tunes which span five decades of music from all types of genres.

Morning Theater & Music Series 10:00 a.m. – The Tale of the Frog Prince Preview Show – The cast from the Lost Colony Musical Theater presents a preview of the famous story, The Tale of the Frog Prince.

Thursday, July 8, 2010
“Fit and Flexible,” Beginning Pilates 7:30 a.m.- This class is for all fitness levels. Participants should bring a Pilates/Yoga mat or a beach towel and water. Kerry Sanders of Outer Banks Yoga and Pilates is the instructor. In the case of inclement weather, this class will be held at the picnic shelter.

Children’s Story Time 10:00 a.m. – Story time is geared to children between the ages of three and seven and is sponsored by the Town’s two book stores: Duck’s Cottage and Island Book Store.

Summer Music Series 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. – Sandy Mountain Boys- This Outer Banks original bluegrass power trio will have you dancing on the Town Green.

Author Discussion Series 10:00 a.m. – Our author discussion series is coordinated by the Town in conjunction with Duck’s Cottage Book Store. This week’s author is S. Deacon Ritterbush presenting “Beachcomber’s Odyssey, Volume 1: Treasures from a Collected Past.”

Please remember to bring a blanket or lawn chair for events being held on the Town Green. Beach umbrellas or tents are NOT permitted within the Town Park. All events will be held outside. In the case of inclement weather or site unavailability, an activity may be cancelled or rescheduled. Any changes will be posted at the Town Park, on the Town’s Web site, and on our events hotline. Additional events may also be added.
