Sea Glass Presentation, Friday, August 15 at 4 p.m.

Why is orange sea glass so rare? How can ‘seeds’ tell you how old a piece of glass is? When is the best time to look for sea glass? The answers to all of your beach glass questions are closer than you think because the Sea Glass Guy is coming! Who’s the Sea Glass Guy? Richard LaMotte, expert in the field and author of the definitive work on the subject, Pure Sea Glass. Intrigued by the ‘jewels’ with which his wife crafted jewelry, Richard found himself enamored with sea glass- especially in the what, where and why. He undertook a self-education that he eventually shared with the world in his beautiful book which also features the stunning photography of Celia Pearson. Richard knows how to find beach glass, when to find it, and has become adept at dating and identifying the origins of specific pieces. He will be on the Outer Banks for two days as part of the Books on the Banks Speaker Series, a collaboration between Downtown Books, Duck’s Cottage Coffee & Books, the Town of Duck and the Dare County Arts Council.

On Friday, August 15, Richard will be signing books at Duck’s Cottage Coffee & Books, at the Waterfront Shops in Duck, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. At 4 p.m. he will present Discovering Nature’s Vanishing Gems in the Town of Duck Meeting Hall at 1200 Duck Road, and will also be available afterwards for sea glass identification. Previous attendees have been mesmerized by Richard’s lecture- this is a rare Outer Banks visit for LaMotte and an opportunity the avid beachcomber should not miss!

The Pure Sea Glass collection includes not only the unique gift book ($34.95) but a 2015 calendar, boxed note cards, an identification card deck, journals and guest book. All events are free and open to the public, seating is first come first seated. For more information visit duckscottage.com, townofduck.com or darearts.org.
