The groundbreaking represents the culmination of several years of work on designing a Town facility which included input from current and former elected leaders, the community, and staff. The facility is designed to be reminiscent of the lifesaving station style, including the Caffey’s Inlet Lifesaving Station in Duck, and will complement the natural beauty of the surrounding environment and the Town’s Village Commercial Area.

The facility will consist of two buildings with wrap-around porches that will connect through a covered breezeway. The larger of the two buildings will be one and a half stories and 5,715 square feet. In addition to housing the Town’s administrative offices, it will also provide public restrooms to serve the Duck Town Park. The second building will be one story and 2,226 square feet. This building will serve as the Town Council meeting room, and will be available for Town-sponsored and community-related events.

Both buildings will be built utilizing heavy timber frame construction to emphasize the natural beauty of the exposed wooden beams, and allow for future flexibility of the building layout. The buildings will have cedar shake siding, seamed metal roofs, dormer windows, a cupola, porches, and cisterns.

The facility was designed by Tymoff and Moss Architects of Norfolk, Virginia; with the assistance of project managers Vanasse, Hangen, and Brustlin, Inc. of Williamsburg, Virginia. The general contractor for the project is Waldt Construction of Point Harbor, North Carolina. Total project costs are estimated at $2.35 million with an expected completion date of fall 2011.

The Town of Duck was incorporated as Dare County’s newest town on May 1, 2002. Currently, the Town of Duck Administrative Office is located at 1240 Duck Road, Suite 106 (The Waterfront Shops), Duck, North Carolina.
