N.C. 12 in Kitty Hawk Anticipated to Close July 13 for Dune Restoration

RALEIGH – The NC Department of Transportation is currently anticipating to close N.C. 12 in Kitty Hawk between Lillian Street and White Avenue starting Monday, July 13, for approximately 30 days, weather permitting. The closure will allow crews with Carolina Marine Structures to rebuild a section of dune washed away by waves from a nor’easter in early May. Intermittent lane closures will be in place throughout the remainder of this week as crews move materials and equipment into place for the project. Should equipment be in place ahead of schedule, the closure could begin on Friday, July 10. A $335,630 contract was awarded to Carolina Marine Structures for this project. Work involves sand bag installation and rebuilding the dune. Repairs had been made at this location in early May that included rebuilding and reopening a section of N.C. 12 that had washed out, as well as making temporary repairs to the dune to protect the road. Now that all necessary permits are in place, crews can rebuild the dune completely. N.C. 12 will be closed to through traffic with a detour in place during the project. Through traffic will use the following detour routes: • Northbound from N.C. 12: Left on White Avenue, right on U.S. 158, right to E. Balchen Street back to N.C. 12. • Southbound from N.C. 12: Right on Lillian Street, Left on U.S. 158, Left on White Avenue back to N.C.12 Residents within the project limits will be able to access their homes during the closure. Beach visitors will also be able to access the bath house at this location, and local restaurants and businesses at N.C. 12 and Kitty Hawk Road will remain accessible. Motorists are advised to use caution while traveling in the area and to expect delays. NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
