The Town purchased 10.33 acres of land on the soundside of NC12 (across from Kellogg's Hardware and surrounding Herron's Restaurant) in the fall of 2003 to be developed as a Town Commons, park, possible location for a municipal building and other uses. To determine these uses the Town Council, on January 7, 2004, established the Municipal Property Master Plan Study Committee (Click here to view the Resolution). The Municipal Property Master Plan Study Committee was charged with several milestone tasks as indicated in the resolution establishing the Committee. These milestone tasks that were approved by Town Council, included studying the potential uses of the property recently acquired by the Town, recommending concepts for these uses to the Town Council and also recommending a five year implementation plan for the development of the property. The Committee consisted of seven members (Click here to view Member list) and utilized a consultant to assist with the process.
