Variances – Nearly all development ordinances in North Carolina contain a provision allowing a community to grant variances in situations where applying the typical standards would result in an unnecessary hardship on a particular property. This training module explains the mandatory standards and process to be used by the Board of Adjustment when reviewing a variance application.
Ordinance Interpretations and Appeals – Community Development Department staff are asked to make decisions and interpretations on a daily basis. Occasionally, someone may disagree with a decision and is offered the right to appeal that decision to the Board of Adjustment. This training module outlines the process to be used by the Board of Adjustment when reviewing an appeal and interpreting the ordinance.
