NOTE REGARDING TEMPORARY SIGNAGE, FLAGS, WIND-DRIVEN DEVICES, AND VEHICLE SIGNAGE
The Town of Duck would like to update business owners on signage rules to keep in mind:
- Flags can be flown as long as they are non-descript and do not identify any products or services sold at the business and do not contain the business name or logo. Businesses can fly flags containing the word "Open" until May 1. After May 1, these flags should be removed.
- The number of non-descript flags that can be flown at each property is based on the amount of road frontage to that property. The rule states that you can have one flag for every 25 feet of road frontage. Sailboards, yard arms, and kites are also considered flags and will be counted towards this requirement. Flag poles must be located at least ten feet from all property lines (except on the sound).
- Flags can be mounted on buildings but must not exceed 35 feet in height above the grade.
- Signs or flags cannot be attached to trees or utility poles and shall not extend into the public right-of-way. The right-of-way usually extends 15 feet from the edge of the paved roadway.
- Temporary banners can be used by businesses to advertise sales or special events up to six times per year for no more than 10 days at a time in season. The Town issues permits for temporary banners; contact the Town for more information.
- Vehicles with signs advertising a business located on the site where the vehicle is parked shall be kept at least 80 feet from the center of NC 12 (Duck Road) which would typically require parking in the second row or further off of Duck Road.
Questions regarding any of these regulations can be answered by calling the Town Office at (252) 255-1234 or e-mail us at info@townofduck.com.
