New Recycling Brochure and Trash Can Stickers Now Available

A new brochure overviewing the Town of Duck's residential recycling program is now available at the Town Office, as well as on-line by clicking here. Stickers for both our residential recycling and regular trash containers are also available at the Town Office, 1240 Duck Road, Suite 106 (The Waterfront Shops).

Brochures and stickers can be obtained by stopping in our offices to pick them up; calling us at (252) 255-1234 or e-mailing us at info@townofduck.com, and we will mail them to you; or asking your property management company to pick them up. For additional information on the Town’s waste collection program, click here.

Residential Recycling Schedule Changes November 1 for Off Season

Beginning on November 1, 2008 the Town’s residential recycling schedule will be:

· November 1 through April 30, curbside recycling will be collected on the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month.

· From May 1 through October 31, curbside recycling will be collected on every Monday.

Duck Volunteer Fire Department to Conduct Training Exercise Today

The Duck Volunteer Fire Department is conducting a live burn training exercise on Friday, October 3 at 118 Canvasback Drive in the Carolina Dunes Subdivision. The exercise will be conducted throughout the afternoon from 2 - 7 p.m.; smoke may be visible during this time.

2nd Annual Duck Jazz Festival Schedule Announced!

The Town of Duck is holding its Second Annual Jazz Festival on Sunday, October 12, 2008. The Duck Jazz Festival will be held on the main stage in the Duck Town Park at 1200 Duck Road from 11 a.m. to dusk. The festival is free and open to the public.

The schedule for the 2008 Duck Jazz Festival is:

Gerald Veasley – Gerald Veasley, Philadelphia-based jazz bassist, will headline the Second Annual Duck Jazz Festival. Gerald comes to the Duck Town Park stage with an impressive resume’ having recorded with the late Grover Washington, Jr.; Teddy Pendergrass; Dianne Reeves; and Earth, Wind, and Fire vocalist Philip Bailey to name a few. He has also shared stages with Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie. Gerald recently released his 11th album “Your Move.”

The Fuzz Band – The Fuzz Band is an eight-piece band which fuses soul, jazz, classical music, hip hop, and rock from Hampton Roads, Virginia. Comprised of classically-trained instrumentalists, as well as accomplished jazz musicians, The Fuzz Band was named the Best New Contemporary Jazz Band in 2005 at The Capital Music Festival. The Fuzz Band has performed with Grammy award-winning artists such as Alicia Keys, Outkast, and Lauryn Hill.

Jackie Scott & The Housewreckers – Jackie Scott & the Housewreckers perform a unique fusion of blues, soul, rock, jazz, and rhythm and blues. Jackie Scott has opened for B.B. King and Taj Mahal, and performed at the 2007 Chicago Blues Festival. Jackie Scott & the Housewreckers hail from Hampton Roads, Virginia.

Connected -- Connected is a jazz quintet based in Elizabeth City, North Carolina and specializes in providing classy jazz entertainment. Connected performs music that ranges from the "New Orleans" jazz style to the more contemporary jazz music of today.

First Flight Jazzhawks -- The First Flight Jazzhawks are the Outer Banks’ own high school jazz ensemble. The Jazzhawks perform a variety of styles of jazz ranging from ragtime to big time contemporary.

The Second Annual Duck Jazz Festival will be held outside rain or shine. The event will not be rescheduled. Lawn seating is available on the Duck Town Green in front of the stage, so bring a blanket or chair. Chairs will also be available for rental from Ocean Atlantic Rentals. Refreshments will be available to purchase and are being provided by the Duck United Methodist Church. Also available will be artist CD’s and Duck Jazz Festival merchandise including t-shirts and a commemorative poster.

Jazz Festival Volunteers Needed

We are looking for volunteers to assist us with this year’s Jazz Festival being held on Sunday, October 12 from 11 a.m. to dusk. It is shaping up to be an amazing event with five acts including our headliner Gerald Veasley. Volunteers are needed help at various times throughout the day to assist with set-up, merchandise sales, grounds crew, hospitality tent staffing, and clean-up. Volunteers will be scheduled in shifts so they may enjoy the show as well. Volunteers will also be asked to attend a meeting the week before the event to obtain volunteer assignments, review logistics, etc.

The Town of Duck Focuses on Renewable Energy

The Planning Board at its August meeting began discussions regarding the application of renewable energy within the Town of Duck. One aspect of this discussion that has received significant national attention in recent months is wind power. Wind resource maps of the region show the Outer Banks as having good potential for wind power production and the Town has already received several informal inquires regarding Town ordinances regulating wind turbines. To further understand local regulatory issues related to wind turbines and also to gain information regarding the practical applications of this technology in a community setting, the Town is participating in a wind energy forum to be sponsored by the Town of Kitty Hawk and being held at the Kitty Hawk Town Hall on Thursday, September 11, 2008 at 6 pm. The public forum will feature a panel of experts from the North Carolina State University Solar Center, the North Carolina Sustainable Energy Association, and the North Carolina Wind Working Group to discuss wind energy technology and its potential applications on the Outer Banks. Agenda topics will include: residential wind energy; the benefits, concerns and technologies of wind energy; and how wind energy is developed.

After a 30 minute presentation, the public is welcome to participate in a question and answer session with the panel of wind energy experts.

The Town of Duck Town Council and Planning Board would like to encourage attendance at this forum as well as future public participation as the Town contemplates ordinances and policies related to renewable energy. TAI CHI AND PILATES BEING OFFERED ON THE DUCK TOWN GREEN THROUGHOUT THE FALL

Duck, NC – The Town of Duck is continuing its successful morning exercise program throughout the fall.

Tai Chi will be offered on Tuesday mornings at 7:30 a.m. through Tuesday, October 28. Tai Chi is an exercise using slow, relaxed, and graceful movements and is appropriate for people of all ages. Julia Daniel from Outer Banks Yoga and Pilates in Kitty Hawk is the instructor.

Pilates will be offered on Thursday mornings at 7:30 a.m. through Thursday, October 30. This class is for all fitness levels. Participants should bring a Pilates/yoga mat or a beach towel. Patti Waller is the instructor.

The classes will be held on the Duck Town Green, 1200 Duck Road. They are free of charge and are open to the public. No registration is necessary.
